Family counselling · Calgary

Family therapy when the whole system needs care.

Family counselling in Calgary and virtually across Alberta, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick — for parents, blended families and households navigating conflict, transitions or a child’s wellbeing.

A family together in a warm room

When one person in a family is struggling, the whole family often feels it. Family therapy gives the people who love each other a structured, supported space to understand what’s happening, listen differently, and build patterns that work better for everyone.

We work with parents and adult children, blended families, and households navigating big changes — separation, illness, a new stepparent, a child’s mental health, the launch into adulthood. Sessions focus on clearer communication, more attunement, and concrete tools the whole family can keep using long after therapy ends.

Family work often overlaps with individual counselling or couples and marriage counselling — we can help you figure out the right starting point in a free 15-minute consultation.

Family work moves at the pace of the slowest, most cautious member of the group. No one is the “identified patient.” Everyone’s experience matters.

What to expect

Your first steps, gently.

  1. 1

Family therapy gives the people who love each other a structured space to understand what’s happening and listen differently. After a free 15-minute consultation, an initial session helps everyone share their perspective — no one is cast as the problem.

  2. 2

Sessions focus on communication, attunement and practical tools the whole family can keep using. Who attends can flex over time depending on what’s most helpful — sometimes the whole family, sometimes a subset.

  3. 3

Family work moves at the pace of the slowest, most cautious member of the group. We go gently, making sure everyone feels safe enough to take part.

Good to know

Questions people often ask.

Does the whole family have to attend every session?
Not necessarily. We’ll decide together who attends and when — sometimes the whole family, sometimes a subset — based on what’s most helpful for the work.
Do you work with families with children or teens?
Yes. We support parents, adult children, blended families and households navigating a child or teen’s wellbeing. Family work often overlaps with individual counselling — we can help you find the right starting point.
What if not everyone wants to come?
That’s common. Meaningful change can start even when one or two members begin, and others often join once they see it isn’t about assigning blame. The consultation is a good place to talk it through.
Is family therapy available virtually?
Yes — in person at Southport SW in Calgary or virtually across Alberta, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
