Therapy for adolescents — a safe place to be heard.

Individual counselling for teens and young people ages 12 and up in Calgary and virtually across Alberta, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick — anxiety, mood, identity, relationships and the hard seasons of growing up.

A warm therapy conversation in the Healing Journey Collective Calgary office

Adolescence can feel like a lot at once — school pressure, friendships, identity questions, family dynamics, social media, and big feelings that don’t always have words yet. Therapy for adolescents gives young people a confidential, non-judgmental space with a trained clinician who is in their corner.

We work with teens and older children (12+) navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, self-worth, confidence, life transitions, and relationship or parenting stress at home. Sessions are paced for developmental stage — collaborative, respectful, and grounded in evidence-based approaches.

Adolescent therapy is different from family counselling, where the whole household is the focus. Many families use both: individual support for the teen, and family sessions when the system needs care together. Not sure which fits? Start with a free 15-minute consultation or meet Idy Akpan, who works with adolescents, adults and couples.

Our approach

How we work with this in session.

1

Developmentally appropriate, collaborative sessions

Evidence-based approaches (CBT, ACT, DBT-informed skills, person-centred and narrative)

3

Trauma-informed and culturally responsive care

4

Parent/caregiver involvement when it supports the teen’s goals

What to expect

Your first steps, gently.

  1. 1

We usually start with a free 15-minute consultation so caregivers (and the teen, when ready) can ask questions and get a feel for fit. Your first sessions focus on building trust and understanding what feels hardest right now.

  2. 2

Depending on age and consent, parents may be involved in parts of the work — while the teen’s session remains a safe, respected space. We’ll talk openly about confidentiality and how we share updates when it’s helpful and appropriate.

  3. 3

Sessions are typically 50 minutes, weekly or every other week to begin. We check in regularly on what’s helping so therapy stays useful and paced for the young person in the room.

If a teen in your life could use a steady, supportive therapist, reach out for a complimentary 15-minute consultation.

Good to know

Questions people often ask.

What ages do you see for adolescent therapy?
We offer individual therapy for adolescents and older children ages 12 and up. Younger children are often better supported through family counselling or a consultation so we can point you to the right starting place.
How is this different from family therapy?
Adolescent therapy centres the teen as the client — their goals, feelings and growth. Family counselling brings the household into the room to work on patterns together. Many families use both over time.
Will parents know what we talk about?
We’ll explain confidentiality clearly at the start. Teens need a private space to open up; caregivers are kept in the loop on safety, progress and practical support in ways that protect trust. Exact limits depend on age, risk and consent — your therapist will walk through this with you.
Is adolescent therapy available virtually?
Yes — in person at Southport SW in Calgary or virtually across Alberta, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
