Idy Akpan, R.P.Psych. — Registered Provisional Psychologist, Healing Journey Collective Calgary

Family, culture, relationships, faith, and lived experiences have all shaped who I am and how I show up as a therapist. From an early age, I learned the importance of listening with compassion, treating others with respect, and walking alongside people through both joyful and difficult seasons of life. These values continue to guide the way I connect with and support clients today.

My path to psychology was not a traditional one. I began my career in engineering, but over time, I felt drawn toward work that allowed me to connect more deeply with people and their stories. While raising a family, I made the decision to return to school and pursue a career that felt more aligned with my values, purpose, and passion for helping others heal, grow, and thrive.

Through work in schools, hospitals, crisis services, community organizations, psychological assessment, and private practice, I have had the opportunity to support people across a variety of life experiences. I work with adolescents, adults, and couples navigating concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship challenges, life transitions, identity, self-worth, and personal growth.

As a Black psychologist in Calgary, I recognize that culture, identity, family, faith, and lived experience can all influence how we understand ourselves, our relationships, and our mental health. I aim to create a compassionate, culturally responsive, and non-judgmental space where you can feel seen, heard, and supported. Therapy is not one-size-fits-all, so I draw from evidence-based approaches and tailor our work to your unique needs, values, strengths, and experiences. If faith or spirituality is meaningful to you, it can also be thoughtfully incorporated into therapy upon request.
